How do you play?
- Type any real five letter word and press Enter.
- Read the colours. Green means the letter is in the word and in the right spot. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in a different spot. Grey means the letter is not in the word.
- Use what you learned for your next guess. You have six guesses in all.
The keyboard below the board keeps track of every letter you have tried, so you can see at a glance which letters are still in play.
What happens when a letter appears twice?
The colours count letters. If you guess SPEED and the answer has one E, only one of your Es lights up. The other stays grey, even though E is in the word. If the answer has two Es, both can light up. Keep this in mind when a word like SPEED or LEVEL could fit.
Is there a new puzzle every day?
Yes. The daily word changes at midnight UTC, and everyone gets the same word that day. Your progress saves on your device, so you can leave and come back. Want more? Switch to Unlimited above the board for as many extra words as you like.
Five tips for solving in fewer guesses
- Open with common letters. A first guess with E, A, R, T and S tells you the most about the answer.
- Use guess two to test new letters. If your first guess found little, try five fresh letters before you commit.
- Move yellow letters. A yellow letter will not be in that spot, so place it somewhere new next time.
- Think about endings. Many five letter words end in ER, ED, LY or CH. Test those when the first letters are set.
- Watch for trap patterns. Words like HATCH, LATCH, MATCH and PATCH differ by one letter. When several fit, use a guess that tests many of those first letters at once.

Which words should you start with?
We ranked every word in our list of 2,096 answers by how many answers contain its letters. This opener uses the most common letters without repeating any: RATES. On average they uncover 40% of an answer's letters.
The letters that show up in the most answers are E (46.7%), A (40%), R (36%), S (30.5%), T (28.9%), O (28.3%). The most common endings are ER (5.3%), ED (4.1%), CH (2.5%), LY (2.1%), SE (2%). And 31% of answers use a letter more than once.
