What is binary?
Binary is how computers count, using only 0 and 1. Each place is worth double the one to its right: 1, 2, 4, 8 and so on. So 10 means two, 11 means three, 100 means four and 101 means five.
How do you play?
- Type a true ten character equation using only 0, 1, the four signs and equals. For example 111+1=1000 means 7 + 1 = 8.
- Press Enter and read the colors.
- Find the hidden equation within six guesses.
Green means right character, right spot. Yellow means it is in the equation somewhere else. Grey means it is not there.
What makes it hard?
Every digit is a 0 or a 1, so the digits tell you little on their own. The real clues are where the signs and the equals sign sit, and how long each number is. A long right side means a big result.
Tips for binary equations
- Find the equals sign first. The length of the right side tells you roughly how big the result is.
- Test one sign at a time. Plus is the most common, then times.
- Convert as you go. Write the decimal value next to each binary number to check your math.
- Numbers never start with 0, so the first digit of every number is 1.
