Fibble

Guess the five letter word, but one tile in every row tells a lie. You get nine tries to work out which colors to trust.

How does the lie work?

After each guess, the game scores your word the normal way. Then it changes exactly one tile to a wrong color. A green might turn grey, a grey might turn yellow, and so on. The other four tiles in that row are true. The lie stays the same if you reload, so you can study it.

The only row that never lies is the winning one. When you guess the word, all five tiles turn green.

Green means the right letter in the right spot. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in a different spot. Grey means the letter is not in the word at all.

How do you catch the lie?

  1. Compare rows. If a letter is green in one row and grey in another in the same spot, one of those tiles is the lie.
  2. Repeat letters on purpose. Put a letter you doubt in the same spot again. Two rows that agree are much more likely to be true.
  3. Count the clues. Each row has four true tiles. If a row seems to say six letters are in the word, something is off.
  4. Use your extra guesses. Nine tries gives you room to test. Spend a guess or two checking a doubtful letter.

Why nine guesses?

A lie in every row means each guess tells you less than in the normal game. Three extra guesses balance that out, so a careful player can still finish.

Who is this game for?

It suits players who find the classic game too easy, and anyone who likes logic puzzles. It feels more like solving a mystery than guessing a word, since you have to weigh each clue before you believe it.

Lying tile word game questions

Is this the original game?

No. This is an independent fan version of the lying tile word game with its own word list. It is not linked to the original game or its owners.

Does every row lie?

Every row except a winning one. Each lying row has exactly one wrong tile.

Can the keyboard colors be trusted?

Not fully. The keyboard copies the tile colors, lies included, so check the rows themselves.

Is the lie random?

It is fixed by the word, your guess and the row, so the same guess in the same row always lies the same way.
