Nerdle

Guess the hidden math equation in six tries. Each guess must be a true equation, and the tiles show which numbers and signs are right.

How do you play?

  1. Type a true equation that is eight characters long, like 12+35=47 or 9*8-2=70.
  2. Press Enter. Each tile turns green, yellow or grey.
  3. Use the colors to find the hidden equation within six guesses.

Green means the right number or sign in the right spot. Yellow means it is in the equation but in another spot. Grey means it is not in the equation.

What counts as a valid equation?

  • It must be exactly eight characters, including the equals sign.
  • The left side does the math, and the right side is a single whole number.
  • Times and divide come before plus and minus, as in school.
  • No leading zeros and no minus sign at the start of a number.

How do you crack it faster?

  1. Find the equals sign first. Its spot tells you how long the answer is. If it sits sixth, the answer has two digits.
  2. Use lots of different digits early. A first guess like 48-32=16 tests six digits and two signs.
  3. Check the signs. Once you know which signs are in, the size of the answer narrows the options a lot.
  4. Do the math before you type. Every guess must be true, so work it out on paper if you need to.

Why do people like math guessing games?

They mix logic with simple sums. You never need more than school math, but you have to think about how numbers fit together. Teachers use them to make mental math feel like a game.
